Chairs of County Commissions Ask Navy to Remove OLF Site from

Chairs of the county boards of commissioners for Camden, Currituck and Pasquotank recently delivered a letter to Secretary of the Navy Raymond Mabus. The commissioners
formally asked that Hale’s Lake, Camden County be removed from the list
of possible choices for the Outlying Landing Field.

August Deadline for Volunteer Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2009 Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service, which is managed by the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.
Submissions will be due to the County Coordinator by Friday, August 28, 2009. The winners will be recognized during a luncheon in November.

NWS Posts Winter Weather Advisory

Weather forecasters placed Northeastern North Carolina and Southside Hampton Roads under a Winter Weather Advisory Tuesday evening. According to National Weather Service forecasts, a developing low-pressure area will move along the North Carolina and Virginia border late in the evening Tueaday and into Wednesday morning, bringing the possibility of precipitation.

With overnight lows forecast in the mid-20’s across the area, local meteorologists predict any precipitation which falls will be in the form of snow.

Fire Ant Quarantine Area Expanded

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is expanding a state quarantine for the imported fire ant in a continuing effort to monitor and address this pest. With the expansion, the quarantine now includes portions or entire areas of 67 counties.
