Currituck Advisory Boards Shuffled

The Currituck County Board of Commissioners at their Monday, January 5 meeting completed the second step in adjusting county advisory boards. In several agenda items, the Board reviewed commissioner’s appointments of citizen members to several of the county advisory boards: Board of Adjustment, Planning Board, and Economic Development Board.

County manager Dan Scanlon explained, that at their previous meeting, the Bord adopted new procedures for commissioner’s appointments to several county advisory boards. As part of that procedure, county staf members had taken current appointees and assigned them to a commissioner. The current board appointments were laid out in each commissioner’s agenda package.

Fire Ant Quarantine Area Expanded

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is expanding a state quarantine for the imported fire ant in a continuing effort to monitor and address this pest. With the expansion, the quarantine now includes portions or entire areas of 67 counties.

Bank Robbery Reported in Moyock

For the second time in a little more than a month, the Currituck Sheriff’s Office is investigating the robbery of a Moyock Bank.

According to a press release from Currituck Public Information Officer, Randall Edwards, a bank robbery occurred on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at the Bank of the Commonwealth, 562 Caratoke Highway, in Moyock.

Edwards related that an unidentified person got away from the bank with an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect was reported to be unarmed at the time of the robbery, which took place at approximately 3:15 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Corolla Greenways to be Discussed

Currituck County will host a community meeting intended to share information and receive citizen feedback regarding the proposed construction of a 1.06 mile greenway, or multi use path, in the Corolla community. All Currituck County residents are invited to attend.

Term limits re-established on Currituck Advisory Boards

The Currituck County Board of Commissioner approved changes to the ordinance which stipulates the method by which county advisory board members are selected and how long they may serve.

According to a presentation by County Attorney, Ike McRee, the ordinance considered at the Monday, December 15 meeting is the first of a two step process whichwill provide each member of the Currituck County Board of Commissioners with appointments to the boards, commissioners and authorities that are created and appointed by the Currituck County Board of Commissioners.

Celebrity Waitstaff Entertains Diners

Third attempt to be made to dredge Whalehead Channel

Currituck County has enlisted the services of a former director of a state environmental agency in renewed efforts to dredge the boat channel leading into the Whalehead Club boat basin.

Charles Jones - former director of the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management (DCM) - is expected to work as a consultant for Currituck County in their most recent attempt to dredge the channel leading to the boat basin.

Animal Shelter projected at $2.5M

Leaders of the Animal Lovers Assistance League (ALAL) presented plans for a new animal shelter to the Board of Commissioners and County Staff, in a worksession prior to the Monday, December 15 Commissioner’s meeting.

     According to the presentation by ALAL?president, Ginger Sikes, theproposed shelter will cost approximately $2.5 million. The group is seeking funding from the county to cover $1.5 million of the projected cost.

     The proposed facility would include amenities such as dog walks, a clinic, and meeting / educational rooms - making it, in Sikes opinion, one of the best such facilities in the nation. Sikes’ presentation states the ALAL?has nearly $1 million in pledges for donatyions of in-kind services including:?labor, landscaping and other construction oriented tasks.

Civil War Trail Markers Dedicated

Local citizens and county officials gathered at the Historic Currituck County Courthouse prior to Monday’s Board meeting to dedicate a series of historical markers commemorating Currituck County’s role in the Civil War.
According to Chris Meekins, author and staff member at the NC?Department of Archives and History, Currituck County held great importance, both geographically and strategically during the early days of the Civil War. According to Meekins, author of the book “Elizabeth City, North Carolina and the Civil War”, the network of sounds and rivers across the region, particularly Currituck Sound, the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal and North River became an important supply line for Federal forces. Meekins related that Currituck was an early target for the Union forces, and a continuing target for Confederate forces.

Liberty Tree Dedicated

     Bob Kohler of the American Legion Post 288 orchestrated the donation of a Liberty Tree to both of our new Elementary schools, Shawboro and Jarvisburg. DMV Mobile Unit - Schedule

The Department of Motor Vehicles Mobile Unit which visits Currituck County once a month is changing its schedule. Beginning with March 6, 2008 the DMV Mobile Unit will come to Currituck on the Thursday of the first full week of each month.

Nelms Cited for Noise Violation

Currituck County Commissioner Barry Nelms has run afoul of the Currituck County noise ordinance once again. Nelms was cited last weekend for violating the County Noise Ordinance on Saturday, November 22 at approximately 10:32 pm.
