Currituck County is now under a Hurricane Warning, issued by the National Weather Service. A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are expected and is issued 36 hours prior to tropical storm-force winds.
At this time, Currituck County has not issued an evacuation order. Currituck County’s emergency control group met at 12 noon and consulted with the National Weather Service and all surrounding counties in eastern North Carolina.
Currently, all ocean-side beaches in Currituck County have red flags posted by Corolla Ocean Rescue. This means that no water entry is permitted by beachgoers.
The National Weather Service has adjusted the timeframe for sustained winds of 40 - 50 mph to hit Currituck from 11 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2 to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph are expected.
Storm surge along the coastline is expected to be 2 – 4 feet, with breaking waves on the coast of 9 – 12 feet. Minimum to moderate beach erosion is expected.
Because of these conditions, the beach road in the 4-wheel drive area of Carova may be impassable by Thursday afternoon, and may remain so until Friday afternoon. Vacationers and residents in Carova should consider vacating the 4-wheel drive area before the beach road is impassable.
Any resident who feels they would need Evacuation Assistance should register with the Department of Social Services, at 252-232-3083. Citizens are reminded that there are no pre-storm shelters in Currituck County.
Property owners should secure loose outdoor items. Pets should not be left outdoors Thursday night. Emergency safety kits should include food, water, clothing, cash, radio, batteries, medicines and pet supplies, with enough to last for at least three (3) days.
