Citizens Urged To Prepare For Possible Hurricane Conditions
Currituck County government urges all residents and visitors to monitor the progress of Hurricane Earl and prepare for possible hurricane conditions by the end of this week.
Currituck County Emergency Management is coordinating information with the National Weather Service (NWS). All county residents and visitors should prepare for the possibility that Earl takes a path closer to land than currently predicted.
Hurricane Earl is currently located approximately 140 miles east of Puerto Rico and 1,360 miles from the North Carolina coast. NWS calls for Earl to reach the Outer Banks vicinity on Thursday, September 2, 2010. The predicted path takes Earl north-northeast along the coastline, approximately 200 miles off the Outer Banks. If Earl follows this path, Currituck County is expected to experience significant storm surge and a 30% chance of sustained winds of at least 39 mph.
To prepare, all citizens should stock emergency kits and be aware of evacuation routes out of Currituck County. Emergency kits should consist of water, food, flashlights, batteries, radio, cash, clothing, medicines and pet supplies. Supplies should be sufficient to last at least three days. In addition, residents and vacationers in the Carova Beach four-wheel drive area should heed warnings of storm surge and rough surf that could make driving on the beach very dangerous.
Citizens can receive updates on www.CurrituckGovernment.com and by calling the Emergency Management information hotline at 252-232-6010. For storm readiness and evacuation information, contact Currituck Emergency Management at 252-232-2115.
