COA BLET Program Holds Recognition Ceremony

College of The Albemarle’s Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program held a recognition ceremony on Friday, May 7, 2010 at the Elizabeth City Campus. Keynote speaker for the event was Mr. Michael D. Robertson, Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Mr. Joe DeStefano, Department Chair of Health Sciences and Public Services reminded the BLET students how much they accomplished in their sixteen weeks of training. “From beginning to end, these students had 624 contact hours, studied 35 distinct blocks of instruction, took 35 topical tests, took 19 practical exams, successfully completed the POPAT physical training course, and passed a 300 question comprehensive state exam”.

Special recognition was awarded to Kevin Davey as the group’s honor graduate and Nathan Large as “Top Gun”, as he was the best shooter overall in the Firearm Class.

The ceremony honored the following students, listed by county of residence:

Currituck County: Garland Akers, Nathan Large, Jason Rigler, and Rochelle Brinkley.

Dare County: Gregory Anders, Matthew Huntingford, and Matthew Stowe.

Gates County: Naomi Wiggins

Pasquotank County: Kevin Davey, Daniel Odell, Michael Richold, and James Simpson
