Currituck County Emergency Management encourages citizens to prepare for the approaching winter storm to best ensure public safety. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Currituck County in effect from 7 p.m. this evening until 1 a.m., Jan. 31, 2010.
According to the National Weather Service, an approaching storm system will produce an average snowfall of 8 – 12 inches in northern Currituck along the North Carolina – Virginia border, with lesser accumulation in areas south toward the Albemarle Sound. Sleet may also mix with the snowfall, possibly creating icy conditions.
Citizens are advised to only travel during the winter storm if necessary. Motorists should take an emergency safety kit when traveling, including a cell phone, additional warm clothing, blankets, water, snacks, flashlight, shovel, windshield scraper, emergency flares and tow chains.
At this time, the following events have been canceled:
• Jan. 30 4H Ranch Sorting Clinic at the 4H Rural Life Center
• All Parks and Recreation events from Jan. 29-31, including the Special Olympics trip to Greenville.
Citizens should monitor news and weather outlets for updates on the winter storm. Call Emergency Management at 232-2115 for more information.
