Two tractor trailers were involved in a midmorning accident in the 2100 block of Caratoke Highway just north of the NC 34 / NC 168 intersection at Sligo. According to a passerby, the accident occured around 10 am, Tuesday morning in front of Powells Farm Market in Sligo.
According to a press release issued by Currituck County Public Information officer, Randall Edwards, NC 168 (Caratoke Hwy) is currently closed in the Sligo area of Currituck County. As a result, traffic in both the northbound and southbound directions on Highway 168 is being diverted around the accident scene.
Southbound motorists are diverted right onto Snowden Road, which takes them to Route 34. Motorists must turn left onto 34 to return to 168 south of the accident.
Northbound motorists are diverted left onto 34, and must turn right onto Snowden Road to return to 168 north of the accident.
Update (Jul 1, 2009; 1:53 pm) : As of approximately 1:45 p.m., the vehicles involved in an accident north of the 168 – 34 intersection in Currituck County have been removed from the roadway. However, due to the necessary Hazardous Materials cleanup, traffic flow along Highway 168 will continue to be interrupted. Cleanup is expected to take another 2 to 3 hours and the following traffic pattern will be observed until complete:
Southbound traffic on Highway 168 in Currituck County will be allowed to pass through with no diversion. However, motorists will be slowed as they pass the accident scene approximately 1,000 yds north of the 168 & 34 intersection.
Northbound motorists on 168 will be diverted onto Poyner’s Road approximately ¼ mile south of the 168 – 34 intersection. From Poyner’s Road, motorists will turn left onto Tulls Creek Road and follow Tulls Creek Rd. until it rejoins Highway 168 in Moyock.
On 34, motorists intending to turn north onto 168 are still diverted onto Snowden Road, and will follow that until it connects to 168 north of the accident scene.
Law enforcement officers will be on scene at the diversion points to direct traffic.
