Ralph Lee “Dink” Gallop, 84 years old, died at his home in Harbinger on April 13, 2009 after a courageous 4 year fight against cancer. He was the youngest of 11 children born on March 21,1925 to the late Isaac Merrill and Bertie Montague Gallop. He was a World War II veteran having served in the Coast Guard Reserves and attended the Jarvisburg Church of Christ. Dink is survived by his wife of 58 years, Vera Seymour Gallop, of the home; daughters Sherry G Rollason (Bobby) of Kill Devil Hills and Kathy G. West (Bruce) of Chesapeake, Va.; sons Ralph Lee Gallop Jr (Brenda) of Harbinger and Marvin Lee Gallop of the home; six grandchildren, Robert Rollason (Susan) and Richard Rollason (Sarah) of Kill Devil Hills, Brad Gallop (Jessica) of Hertford, Drew Gallop of Harbinger, Becky and Kristen West of Sarasota, Fla.; 6 great-grandchildren Benjamin, Charlotte and James Robert Rollason, Morgan, Aspen and Parker Gallop; and a brother, Herbert Gallop, of Harbinger. Dink was a retired pilot boat captain and commercial fisherman. He was a man with many talents learned the hard way for he had no formal schooling having quit school after 5th grade when he decided he could learn more living off the land than sitting in a classroom. He worked hard at several different trades to earn a living and was very frugal all his life. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be sent to Skin Cancer Foundation Development Dept 149 Madison Ave, Suite 901, New York, NY 10016. The family will receive visitors at the home 219 Halls Harbor Road, Harbinger. Graveside services will be held Thursday morning, April 16, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery in Harbinger by Pastor Dennis Crehan of the Jarvisburg Church of Christ assisted by Tom Hunt.
