Currituck County is included among the first nine highway and bridge projects funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Gov. Bev Perdue announced on March 24, 2009.
An existing bridge on Shingle Landing Rd, over Shingle Landing Creek in Moyock, will be replaced. According the Governor’s office, a $584,600 contract was awarded to S.T. Wooten Corporation. Final completion of the project is set for no later than December 1, 2009.
Overall, the nine contracts awarded by Transportation Secretary Gene Conti total $36.3 million. Other counties receiving projects include Brunswick, Camden, Gaston, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Scotland and Stanly counties. Two additional projects, one in Alamance County and one in Forsyth/Stokes counties were let to contract and are expected to be awarded soon.
According to Gov. Perdue, construction of all projects can begin as soon as April 27. Currituck’s project is the lone exception to this timeline. The Shingle Landing bridge replacement will begin no sooner than July 1 due to an environmental moratorium.

NCDOT received a total of $838 million through the economic recovery plan, including $735 million for highway and bridge projects and $103 million for transit. In February, Gov. Perdue announced 70 highway and bridge projects that would be let to contract between March and June using the first half of NCDOT’s recovery funds. The highway and bridge projects being paid for through the remaining funding will be announced next month.
