At approximately 8:20 a.m., the City of Chesapeake notified the Currituck County Communications Center that the 168 bypass (Chesapeake Expressway) in Chesapeake has been closed due to icy conditions. Chesapeake officials warned motorists to use extreme caution if using Rt. 17 north as an alternate route, also due to icy conditions.
According to Currituck county Public Information officer, Randall Edwards, the City of Chesapeake re-opened the 168 bypass sometime shortly before 10:49 a.m.
Travellers are reminded to use caution, since falling temperatures will cause existing moisture on the highways to freeze and may result in black ice.
