Two Currituck County local elementary schools participated in the National Geographic Geography Bee the week of January 12, 2009. Ten students participated in the bee at Griggs Elementary. Taking first place was Alexandra DeLuca, second place went to Sidney Caldwell and third went to Preston Smith. Other participants included Zach Goodwin, Marie Fetters, Kayla Heilig, Ray Allen, Sydinie Phillips, Abigail Rippin, and Angie Chen.
Eight students participated at Jarvisburg Elementary. First place winner and the school champion was Jacob Blackman, second place went to Alexis Campbell and third place went to Megan Doherty. Chloe Derby, Cameron Hamm, Tiffany Ostrom, Reese Rupert, and Jerred Midyette also participated.
Students were chosen for the “Final Round” by correctly answering questions in their classrooms. Those students with the most correct answers were then chosen to compete at the school level. The school champions from Jarvisburg Elementary, Griggs Elementary and Currituck County Middle will be given a written test. Those tests will be sent off and if students score high enough, compared to other school winners in the state, these students could have the chance to compete at the State Geography Bee in Raleigh. Great job students and congratulations school champions!
