Area under Winter Weather Advisory

The National Weather Service iN Wakefield, Virginia issued a Winter Storm Warning at 4:44 pm Monday, January 19. The advisory, in effect from 9 pm Monday evening through 6 pm Tuesday evening for the following counties / cities: Bertie (NC), Camden (NC), Chowan (NC), Currituck (NC), Gates (NC), Hertford (NC), Northhampton (NC), Pasquotank (NC), Perquimans (NC), Chesapeake (VA), Norfolk (VA), Suffolk (VA), Virginia Beach (VA).

Weather forecasters anticipate an upper level disturbance will move off the coast and develop into a quick moving area of low pressure strengthening off the North Carolina Coast, pushing a band of moisture into coastal areas, while pulling cold air in from the north and northwest. The combination could bring accumulations of from 2 – 4 inches of snow before ending Tuesday evening.

Precipitation will begin along the coast as a rain snow mix late Monday evening, changing over to all snow during the predawn hours on Tuesday. Locally higher accumulations are possible.

A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Area residents and travellers should be prepared for slippery roads, and use caution when driving.
