Currituck County will host a community meeting intended to share information and receive citizen feedback regarding the proposed construction of a 1.06 mile greenway, or multi use path, in the Corolla community. All Currituck County residents are invited to attend.
This special meeting will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the The Richard A. Brindley Sports Center in the Corolla Light Subdivision, located at 1026 Ocean Trail.
A short presentation delivered by members of the Currituck County Planning Department will begin at 4:00 p.m., followed by a floating “open house” until 6:30 pm. This will include maps of the proposed greenway and opportunities to provide feedback. County staff will be available to answer any questions.
Currituck County’s Board of Commissioners approved on Jan. 5 an application seeking a $500,000 matching grant from the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund to construct a 10-foot wide, 1.06 mile multi-use path and small park in Corolla. The proposed trailhead will be located at Currituck Heritage Park and extend north to a location near the parking lot of the Currituck Banks Coastal Reserve.
The small park, termed a “pocket park”, is approximately midway on the path. This is expected to include a small picnic pavilion, water fountain, grill, chairs, natural landscaping and a rain garden designed to absorb stormwater runoff.
Once completed, the Greenway would promote connectivity between several important landmarks in Corolla, including the Currituck Lighthouse, Heritage Park, Whalehead Club, N.C. Wildlife Education Center and Historic Corolla Village, as well as the local communities.

What? a 500K matching grant application from the P&R Trust Fund? Who knew P&R had a trust fund? How is the “Fund” funded? Who is paying the matching part? I was under the impression that this was one of those tourism projects being funded out of the 6% tax. That is not the case? I like the greenway idea, it would be nice if the county was upfront in the explanation of all the moving parts.
