Animal Shelter projected at $2.5M

Leaders of the Animal Lovers Assistance League (ALAL) presented plans for a new animal shelter to the Board of Commissioners and County Staff, in a worksession prior to the Monday, December 15 Commissioner’s meeting.

According to the presentation by ALAL?president, Ginger Sikes, theproposed shelter will cost approximately $2.5 million. The group is seeking funding from the county to cover $1.5 million of the projected cost.

The proposed facility would include amenities such as dog walks, a clinic, and meeting / educational rooms - making it, in Sikes opinion, one of the best such facilities in the nation. Sikes’ presentation states the ALAL?has nearly $1 million in pledges for donatyions of in-kind services including:?labor, landscaping and other construction oriented tasks.

Raines : Funny Money

Last week we were talking about the “Big Three” auto bailout. Since then, it appears that congress is balking at giving Chrysler and GM $15 billion as a “bridge loan” so they can avoid bankruptcy for a few weeks or months. The senate refused to pass the bill, then the Bush White House said they were going to furnish some sort of aid. So far, they have failed to do so. Could it be that they are coming around to “Country Boy Logic”?

Steinburg : Prejudice could use a little Christmas

The late Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne wrote the music and lyrics to “The Christmas Waltz,” which celebrates in song the wonder, joy, awe and love of this very special time of year. “It’s that time of year when the world falls in love, every song you hear seems to say, Merry Christmas ….” The magic of the season is everywhere, allowing most of us to place our problems, fears, and even our prejudices on hold until after the New Year.

Civil War Trail Markers Dedicated

Local citizens and county officials gathered at the Historic Currituck County Courthouse prior to Monday’s Board meeting to dedicate a series of historical markers commemorating Currituck County’s role in the Civil War.
According to Chris Meekins, author and staff member at the NC?Department of Archives and History, Currituck County held great importance, both geographically and strategically during the early days of the Civil War. According to Meekins, author of the book “Elizabeth City, North Carolina and the Civil War”, the network of sounds and rivers across the region, particularly Currituck Sound, the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal and North River became an important supply line for Federal forces. Meekins related that Currituck was an early target for the Union forces, and a continuing target for Confederate forces.

Advent IV: Familiar Sides Dishes with a new twist!

It isn’t always easy to determine whether a vegetable dish is something to serve “on the side” or as the main attraction. Think about a typical Christmas table: At the center, a large, glossy brown turkey, a nice Standing Rib Roast or a Baked Ham; arranged all around are a banquet of vegetable sides: Brussels sprouts with chestnuts, green beans flavored with nuts or bacon, creamed corn or spinach, baked squash drizzled with honey, sweet potato soufflé. Adding a variety of vegetable dishes to your meals livens up any main dish, even main dishes that feature vegetables.

Advent III: Gifts from the heart and hearth

Christmas for me and my family is a time of intense domestic involvement. Many of the visible tokens of celebration, the decoration of the house and the presents for friends, are in fact family projects that are relaxing and pleasurable.
