Good Ol' Boys

GOBGB : Semantics

Block Cap Aou know, I’m gettin tired of all these E cono mists up there in the Capital, trying to tell us that they are just figurin out we’re in a recession,” Bubba grumbled to his good friend.

Leroy chuckled, “sure enough, doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that times are tight.”

Bubba nodded, adding “and they’re gonna get a wee bit tighter.”

Leroy finished fillin’ up the old pickup, and whistled - “man, I tell ya. not mor e than a month ago that gas would have burnt a hole in my wallet. Now the prices have darn near hit rock bottom.”

Bubba laughed aloud, “yeah the oil companies are probably figurin’ they’ll be lucky if anybody is left with a job that can afford to buy even the cheapest gas.”

LeRoy nodded as the pair hopped in the old truck and head north down the main highway toward Barco.

”So you were saying, you’re tired of those high powered think tankers trying to tell us what we already knew?” LeRoy asked his friend, prompting him back to the conversation at hand.

”Yeah that’s right. It’s all semantics - plain and simple,” Bubba agreed and continued. “My grandpa, he came up during the Great Depression - he could paint a clear picture of financial hard times,” Bubba offered.

”Oh? And how did he do that?” LeRoy asked his friend, knowing good and well that he was gonna be told anyhow.

”Well he had an an old saying that went like this: we are in a recession if your neighbor losses his job, but we are in a depression if you lose your job!” Bubba winked and grinned.

LeRoy smiled, “well yeah, I reckon that does make sense.”

Bubba nodded and grinned, “well my other grandpappy, he had an even better sayin, went somethin like this: a recession is when you can’t afford the collards of the faback to put in the pot and a depression when you can’t even afford a pot!”

The pair chuckled aloud as they headed off on Shortcut Road toward Camden.

Next Week: Our lads fall on hard times!
