Tornado Watch in Effect Until Early Afternoon

Residents of Currituck County are advised that a tornado watch is in effect until approximately 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 6, 2008 as Tropical Storm Hanna passes northeastern North Carolina.

At 8:00 a.m., Sept. 6, Hanna was located approximately 40 miles ESE of Raleigh, N.C., and is moving NNE at 22 mph with maximum sustained winds near 50 mph. The National Weather Service expects Hanna to move quickly through northeastern N.C., and has issued a Tropical Storm warning from Cape Fear, N.C. to Merrimack River, Massachusetts.

Residents should use extreme caution if travel is necessary, due to high wind conditions. Rainfall from Hanna is expected to be approximately 4 to 6 inches, and coastal storm surge flooding of 1 to 3 feet above normal tide levels is expected.

Residents and visitors in the Outer Banks may find the 4-wheel drive beaches impassable due to tides and storm surge, and should plan travel accordingly. Citizens in low-lying areas should be aware of possible flooding and move to alternate locations if necessary. Vacationers traveling to the Outer Banks should consider arriving later on Sept. 6 or Sept. 7, after the main effects of Hanna have passed through the area.

Currituck 9-1-1 is fully operational to respond to citizen emergencies. Currituck Emergency Management is available at 232-2115, and the EM Informational Hotline can be accessed at 232-6010.

The Currituck Animal Shelter is closed Saturday, Sept. 6, and will re-open Sunday, Sept. 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All Convenience Centers in Currituck County are closed Saturday, Sept. 6 and will re-open Sunday, Sept. 7 from 1:00 -7:00 p.m.

Currituck EM encourages residents and visitors to continue to monitor Hanna as storm conditions remain in the area throughout the day
