An unadvertised trip taken Monday, January 14, 2008 by three members of the Currituck Board of Commissioners apparently violated public notification requirements of the North Carolina open meetings law.

Currituck County’s purchase of The Courtesy Ford dealership in Moyock is apparently coming closer to reality. Visitors to the facility located in the Virginia / North Carolina State line will be greeted by an empty parking lot, bare interior walls, and a message to Courtesy Ford patrons from sales manager Greg Stewart.
A large sign placed inside the front door of the building bears a note expressing thanks to all of Courtesy’s customers at this location over the years. The note goes on to say that Courtesy has had the opportunity to “assist” the county achieve it’s goal of locating a visitors center on NC 168 in mainland Currituck.

Since the ordinance did not pass by a unanimous vote - Board Chairman Barry Nelms was out of town - the board was required to hold a second vote on the ordinance change, which would have required a simple majority to pass. The board never held a second vote on the ordinance.

“Why I’m gettin’ ready to celebrate Old Christmas,” Bubba replied rather matter-of-factly.
LeRoy scratched his head in wonderment, “I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that one.”
“Well that’s probably ’cause you’ve never had occasion to [...]
